Doulaography

Hi, I’m Rachel, wife to Rich, mama of three and passionate about birth, pregnancy and motherhood.

For as long as I can remember, I have always loved babies, children and anything pregnancy related. All I ever wanted to be was a Mum. When I was in Year 6 at Primary school, while everyone else was playing games in the playground, you’d usually find me voluntarily spending my break time with the Reception children. I also played with my dolls well into my teenage years. They had names, routines, outfits and they were treated like real babies. On reflection, nurturing has always come naturally to me, even though my first “babies” were made of plastic.

I have always been interested in the human body and science and after my GCSEs I studied Biology & Chemistry A levels, which led onto a degree in Biomedical Sciences at university. After uni, I did a season in the French Alps working as a “chalet girl” and loved every minute and met my future hubby!

After my season, I travelled around Europe, Australia & Asia, then it was time to get a “proper” job!  I worked as a Territory Manager for a Medical Company selling medical equipment into primary care. As soon, as I fell pregnant I handed in my notice, as I finally had my dream job and I knew I wanted to be a “stay at home” mum.

Not long before my first child was born, I experienced the loss of my mum. She was physically disabled, suffering from Rheumatoid Arthritis for many years and I’d help care for her since my dad had passed away when I was fifteen, twelve years earlier. Stepping into parenthood without my parent’s love, support and guidance was challenging at times. I had very little support beyond my husband.

I became a birth and postnatal doula because I enjoy caring and looking after people. I am particularly passionate about supporting women and families throughout their parenthood journey.

I know how important and beneficial this support is to the start of your parenthood journey. It can profoundly impact not only you, but carry on into your baby’s early experiences of life.

As a mum of three, I understand how different every path into parenthood can be. Each of my own births were so different, shaping not only my perspective but also the compassionate, flexible and non judgemental support I offer to families.

Alongside my work as a doula, I’m also a volunteer breastfeeding peer supporter with Families & Babies. I chose to breastfeed my children and with my first child I found it hard. I like to help new mums feel supported, confident and informed in their feeding journeys, whatever that may look like for them, as I know breastfeeding is not for everyone and that’s just fine.

Outside of my work, I love spending time in nature, birdwatching, hiking, beach walks with my little cockapoo, Willow, spending time with my family, and catching up with friends. I love interiors and enjoy creating calm, comforting spaces. I’m also a passionate knitter and run a small baby and mama knitwear business, which I built whilst raising my children. I enjoy simple pleasures, like a slow morning or reading a good book in the sun with a cuppa.

Becoming a parent can be beautiful, overwhelming, empowering, and everything in between. My role is to walk alongside you, offering support, reassurance, and a steady presence, so you feel seen, heard, and held throughout your journey.

Choosing a doula is all about the right connection. If you feel drawn to connect with me, please do not hesitate to get in touch and we can arrange to meet in person and see if our personalities fit.
