Doulaography
I'm Rubi, a Mexican doula, anthropologist, and birth worker based in Muswell Hill, North London. I've been supporting women through pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum since 2018, through both private clients and voluntary work. I've attended 40+ births myself, and overseen the support and care of 300+ families.
I was born and grew up in Mexico, where I learned from my mother and grandmother to understand health, healing, and the body through generations of traditional knowledge. That upbringing shapes everything I do as a doula. I bring that lineage, alongside my academic training in social anthropology and a postgraduate degree in decolonial social studies, into a practice that is both deeply rooted and rigorously informed.
What I offer:
I work with families from early pregnancy through the first weeks of postpartum. Antenatally, I support you in building a birth intentions document that reflects your real wishes and helps you make informed choices; we navigate your feelings around preparing for birth and we co-create your own affirmations, which I then record into a personalised hypnobirthing relaxation audio. I'm also honest and practical: birth doesn't always go as planned, and I support families in navigating those shifts with clarity and calm.
During labour I offer continuous hands-on support, for as long as birth takes. I hold space for partners, older children, and wider family too, so everyone feels supported.
Postnatally, I offer birth debriefing, postnatal visits, breastfeeding support, and guidance on babywearing, cloth nappies, co-sleeping, and attachment parenting. I also bring homemade Mexican food into clients' homes: traditional recipes chosen to support recovery after birth, often loved by the families I work with.
One of my most cherished offerings is the closing of the bones, a traditional Mexican postpartum ceremony rooted in the knowledge passed down through my family and community, and further informed by the practice of midwife Naolí Vinaver.
Charity & community work:
I've worked with Maternity Mates and Birth Companions. I'm a doula mentor for Red Ted Doulas, a volunteer coordinator for Doulas Without Borders, a birth and phone volunteer at Birth Companions, and I have trained other doulas in trauma-informed care, anti-racism, and Mexican postpartum traditions.
I am a LGBTQ+ ally, neurodiveristy champion, anti-racist, and feminist. I work in both English and Spanish, and have particular expertise navigating the NHS maternity system in complex circumstances.
